Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
