EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
