Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
